The history of Bansko - rich and intriguing! |
The town of Bansko (10,127 citizen) is a main administrative, cultural and economic centre of the County of Bansko. It is located 161 km south of the capital Sofia and 59 km South-East from Blagoevgrad with both of which it is well connected in terms of transport utilities: roads, buses, taxis, etc. Famous as the entrance to the great mountain of Pirin, Bansko is one of the fastest growing Bulgarian winter resorts with a growing influence in the summer torusim industry as well. The average number of visiting tourists exceeds 130, 000 people including a massive number of foreigners (English, Dutch, Russian, American and others). This is the favourite place for a weekend rest for people coming from the bigger Bulgarian towns and cities.
The specific renaissance atmosphere, the rich historical and cultural heritage, the preserved folklore and crafts, the original cuisine, the countless cosy and neat private hotels and mekhanas in their traditional style - all that combined with the marvellous natural beauty of the Pirin and the warm mineral waters in the nearby Dobrinishte village make Banksko quite a unique tourist centre the visitors of which grow ever so much. The town has the status of a "unique town with an international significance in the tourism industry" (since 1979). In Bansko there are around 150 monuments. Five of them are bearing a religious theme: the "Sveta Troitza" church with its clock tower, "Velianova kashta (house)" with its beautiful artistic frescoes by master Velyan Ognev - one of the best known members of the Bansko Art School (an institution that was nation-wide famous long ago, which does not exist anymore), the museum of "Neofit Rilsky", "Benina Kashta", the museum of Nikola Vaptzarov, the church "Uspenie Bogoroditchno".
The museum estate is one of the best in the country and it includes: "Velyanova Kashta" the museum of "Neofit Rilsky" and the museum of Nikola Vaptsarov and also the Centre for arts and poetry where there is a year-round ethnographic exhibition-emporium; the icon exhibition of "Banska zhivopisna shkola" (Bansko Painting School). The architecture of Bansko is unique - it usually consists of a strong bracing stonewall and this can be observed on many streets in the town, among which are "Yane Sandansky", "Velyan Ognev", "Neofit Rilsky" and others. The cultural event that bears the biggest significance is the Celebration of Bansko's traditions which takes place every year during May for roughly one week in the ancient part of the town. Apart from that a great tourist attraction is the original picnic-abduction with a rich folklore programme in the surroundings of the town done using unique horse carts. During the summer one may attend the traditional jazz festival which sees the preformances of many popular bands from around the country and the world. During the nice and warm August nights of Bansko under the clear skies many people enjoy the nice performances of gifted musicians while the fresh mountain air and the friendly athmosphere make this whole experience unforgettable. The fete lasts for five days the first day always being 8 August.
Bansko is the birthplace of many great Bulgarians, among which we need to mention Paisyi Hilendarsky - a name worshipped by the Bulgarians as it is related a great deal to the Bulgarian culture and enlightenment; Nikola Vaptsarov - a poet and anti-fascist known world-wide, who was the only Bulgarian to receive an international award for peace, Neofit Rilsky - again a significant figure in the education and culture of us Bulgarians, Toma Vishanov - Molera - the founder of Bansko Art School.Bansko is more than just the small pretty town you visit. It is different than the other towns that you have ever been or might go to. Nowhere else would you see such gates and stone walls, such songs and such traditional clothing for both men and women. Nowhere else would you expect to hear such unique dialect and taste more delicious meals than the local ones. There is no real need to comment on the wine - the one produced there is a cure for the heart! The people of Bansko (Banskalyi as they are called), these children of the mountain are quite something. They have their own Weltanschauung and they assimilate the world of today in their own way. You might recognise a "Banskaliya" if they have a very strong sense of humour while at the same time being very practical.
How and when this town has so much seperated from the common wheel of life and chosen its own way is still not known. Pretty unusual is the surrounding nature, too, but then, this maybe is a part of the answer. Surrounded by three mountains with numerous rivers, vast meadows and gigantic wallnut-trees in the fields - the paysage is the mother nature's creation, not as many say a resemblance of the views in the Alps or the Kaukasian mountains.
According to the archeologists the first people to settle in the area were the ones who lived 3500 years ago. A thick layer of dust and forests have covered their tracks for eternety. The severe winter gales and the high mountain peaks have toughened the local stock breeders and have taught them endurance, ascetism and sacrifice. They loved and they hated the place. The mountain has turned into many myths which have ever since been transmitted between the generations.A new beginning for Bansko is the union of several small constituencies into one village. This happens in the second millenium after Christ as it was thought to be something that could have helped the locals prevent the invasions of the Asiatic tribes. The historical events that have marked Bulgarian history only reinforce the great idea of this union. With drastic actions during the Ottoman slavery the people of Bansko have earned themselves the fame of people disobedient and adamant.
But the real fame of Bansko is not hiding behind some great battles with the enslavers. Its pride and its contribution to the BUlgarian nation lies behind the arts, the enlightenment nad education, the crafts that have developped during the last 300 years. During the second half of 20th centaury Bansko sees itself reforming with a remarkable swiftness and depth. It quickly sees that it is a good place for tourism and soon it becomes of international significance in the industry. We should always remember: Bansko is not only a picturesque town, it is an integral part of the Bulgarian spirit!
