Borovets is the oldest and the largest mountain resort in Bulgaria. It is located at 1350 M above sea level on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains in the midst of an ancient pine forest. The resort is situated at the base of Mousala Peak (2925 m and the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula). Borovets is easily accessible, being only 73 km from Sofia and 125 km from Plovdiv. The nearest town is Samokov, which is only 10 km from the resort.Borovets started its development when King Ferdinand built his summer residence in the area in 1896. The resort has evolved into a modern first class ski resort offering luxury hotels, restaurants, clubs, shops and of course an excellent network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the mountain.

Borovets is an Alpine style resort and provides excellent opportunities for a wide range of winter sports including downhill and cross-country skiing, ski jumping and a top notch biathlon track. The resort has twice hosted World Cup Alpine skiing competitions. Its biathlon track is renowned as one of the best in Europe. The slopes of Borovets have a permanent snow cover from December to April averaging more than 1.5 m in depth. The air in Borovets is crystal clear and free of pollutants. The average temperature during the coldest month January is -4 °C about 28 degrees Farenheit. The ski runs are of varying difficulty and are suitable for skiers of all experience levels from beginners to experts. The slopes and lifts are maintained in perfect condition and are equipped with international markings and multilingual signs.

The ski runs of Borovets are located in a couple of different areas around the resort. " Cross-country courses and learning centre and the biathlon tracks are located 2 km away from the resort. " The 50 m and 75 m ski jumps are nearby and are serviced by a chair lift.
The entire resort is serviced by a well organized system of lifts and tows including an enclosed gondola lift.
Beginning with the 2002-2003 season, all skiers and snowboarders going to Borovets were able to enjoy the benefits of new snow cannons for the production of artificial snow on slopes 2 and 3.
In addition to its superb skiing facilities Borovets has developed a reputation for apres-ski to rival any place in Europe with bars, cafes and clubs to suit every taste. There's a good choice of classy, lively bars like Black Tiger, Harry's Bar, Buzz Bar, Bonkers and Peter's karaoke-bar. Most of the places remain open untill early morning and offer good prices and special 'happy hour' discounts. The Bulgarian folklore evenings are traditional attraction, that must not be missed, featuring lively centuries-old music and dance while visitors dine on tasting native Bulgarian cuisine and world-famous Bulgarian wines that will surely make you their fan for life.
