The city of Haskovo is a municipal and regional center. The shortest and quickest road connecting Europe and the Middle East passes through the municipality. The structure of the transport system in Haskovo region consists of air, land and accessible sea transport. Two of the trans-continental roads, which are the most important ones for Bulgaria, intersect on the territory of the region. The first one is from Western to Central Europe, passing through Sofia - Plovdiv - Svilengrad to Istanbul, the Near East, Asia and North Africa. The second one is from Northern Europe through Russe - Gorna Oryahovitsa-Haskovo to the Mediterranean. Owing to the numerous transport connections between Bulgaria and the rest of the world, the region has very well developed transport facilities. The national road and railway network fully covers the Municipality. Four international transport corridors, Nos. 4, 8, 9, and 10 pass through the city of Haskovo. The transport corridor "Europe - Asia" includes the first-class road E-80 and the main railway line E-70C. Near the city of Haskovo there is an airport with a 15-kilometer track, which is not operational at present. The opportunities for using sea transport are the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. The communication system is comprised mainly of Bulgarian Telecommunications Company. A digital and an analogue system for national and international telephone connections is in place. There are post offices in each of the population centers in the Municipality. The cell phone operators provide full coverage. The telecommunication services in the municipality have been digitalized. The industry in Haskovo municipality is multi-specialized. Preserved and developed is the specialization in the field of production of machines for the foodstuffs industry and the dairy industry (Donido, PIM, Rodina), the heating and household appliances (Erato). In the tailoring industry and knitted fabrics production there is tough competition among the numerous private companies, which produce and offer on the market good quality production at competitive prices. Numerous private companies with relatively modern technical equipment, which produce a wide range of goods, work in bread production, meat-processing and dairy industry. The canning industry is a traditional sub-sector in Haskovo municipality. This is conditioned by the constructed good material and technical facilities and the high quality of the fruits and vegetables produced. An agricultural produce exchange (called Maritsa) for trading fruits and vegetables has been working on the territory of the municipality since recently. The major economic structures with foreign participation are: Neochim AD - a major producer of chemical fertilizers, industrial chemicals and gases. The company develops research and engineering activity. Dimon Bulgaria AD - tobacco industry owned by the American company Dimon ltd; Kamenitsa ÀD - brewing industry, owned by the Interbrew company; Voulkan AD - cement industry, owned by Italcemente group-Bulgaria. Haskovo municipality has extremely favorable soil and climate conditions for plant-growing. The Mediterranean climate and the water resources in the municipality are natural prerequisites for the development of the vegetable growing (cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers) and fruit-growing (apples, cherries and pears). A popular and traditionally grown industrial crop is tobacco. There are favorable climate conditions for the growing of vineyard massifs, which are a precious raw-material source for the development of wine production in the municipality. The city of Haskovo is one of the traditional wine centers in the country. Priorities for development of the municipality
Haskovo municipality is the only one in the region, which has been specified as a region for development pursuant to the Regulation for Determining the Regions for Targeted Influence. That is why its future development is related mainly to creating conditions for economic revival. In this respect of particular importance are the efforts of all institutions for fostering the starting entrepreneurship and for stimulating the development of the small and medium-size enterprises sector. The future development of the municipality is connected also with the adequate usage of the natural and climate factors for agriculture - making efforts for developing prospective and market-oriented agricultural productions, creation of consultant agricultural centers, etc. The historical past and the rich culture of the region coupled with the well developed transport and tourist infrastructure are a favorable factor for developing tourism. Valuable contribution in this respect stems from the relations the municipality has established with cities in the USA, Greece, Turkey, England, China, Yugoslavia, and Belarus. Sights of nature and monuments of culture
One of the unique sights in Haskovo is the monument to St. Virgin Mary). It has been entered in the 2004 Guinness World Records Book. Haskovo Municipality applied for a world record and received a positive answer and a nomination certificate in the "Religion" section. The dimensions of the monument are as follows: height - 32.8 m, length - 15 m and weight - 80 tons. It was inaugurated in 2003, on 8th September - the Day of Haskovo. Its construction was financed with money donated by the Haskovo citizens. The statue was made by the sculptîrs Petyo Alexandrov, Nikola Stoyanov and Co. Virgin Mary is considered the patroness of the city. The birth of the Most Holy Virgin Mary is celebrated as one of the biggest holidays. Data about organized celebrations dedicated to Virgin Mary has been recorded since 1896. The day of birth of the Most Holy Virgin Mary - the eighth of September was declared the holiday of the city of Haskovo in 1993. Emblematic for the region are the fortress of Hissarya darting back to the Middle Ages in Haskovo and the Assenova Krepost in the village of Klokotnitsa. The specific architecture is one of the sights of the municipality. Many of the streets in oriental style have been preserved. The preserved old part of the city has Renaissance architecture. The center of Haskovo has the oldest mosque in the country, which attracts numerous tourists. There are many antique houses and public buildings, which have been declared monuments of culture; they preserve the unique spirit of the history of Haskovo. The Paskaleva house has been turned into an ethnographic museum. In the Shishmanova house there is an exhibition of the local crafts. The historical museum in Haskovo keeps a unique collection of antique exhibits. The cultural centers of importance are Zarya "chitalishte" (arts, culture and literature center) and Hristo Smirnenski regional library. Every year the city holds various festivals such as the Southern Spring Days of Literature, Nedyalka Simeonova Days of Music, the Pretty Thrace Sings folklore fair, the Haskovo Jazz Festval. The city offers good conditions for short holidays and recreation in the well-kept parks of Yamacha and Kenana. Haskovo Municipality has well developed facilities for tourists, as well as for holding sport, business and cultural events. Associations, memberships, fraternized towns
